The latest entry in the world of supernatural horror, Rot, penned by Hinckley-based author Richard Coiley, is now available.

Released on July 28, 2024, this gripping novel delves into the life of a nurse ensnared by poverty, despair, and alcoholism, whose life becomes even more nightmarish as a mysterious rot begins to infest her home and everything in it.

Inspired by iconic films such as The Exorcist, The Blair Witch Project, and Hereditary, Rot is a chilling tale that will captivate fans of Stephen King and H. G. Wells. Coiley’s narrative prowess shines as he crafts a story that is as suspenseful as it is horrifying.

A haunting tale of despair and decay

The story follows a former nurse whose life spirals into darkness due to poverty and addiction. As winter sets in, a mysterious and malevolent rot starts spreading throughout her house, threatening to consume not just the physical structure but also the lives within it.

The protagonist, already tormented by her own demons, must confront this new terror that leaves nothing but decay and madness in its wake.

Richard Coiley: A local talent with a flair for the uncanny

Richard Coiley is a well-known figure in the horror and science fiction genres, both in writing and visual art.

His YouTube channel, @TimeWastingHero, showcases his artistic endeavours, while his merchandise is available on Redbubble. Coiley’s storytelling is heavily influenced by his love for films and TV shows, resulting in a unique, visually driven narrative style.

Reflecting on his work, Richard said: "I really enjoy scary supernatural horror stories and wanted to explore what I could do and where my ideas would take me if I just allowed them to pour out of me.

"While I love the chaos and fun of over-the-top horror films like The Evil Dead 2 or the Elm Street series, I find myself more a fan of the ‘eerie and uncanny’.

"It's the suspense that I get a kick out of the most; the way a situation or idea can get under my skin and the longer it can be held there, the better."

A deep dive into human emotions

Richard's approach to horror focuses on making characters feel real and relatable. By doing so, he aims to draw readers into the story emotionally, making the horror elements more impactful. He cites films like Hereditary, The Witch, and 28 Days Later as inspirations for creating stories that blend suspense with a sense of eerie reality.

Richard added: "I try to capture this feeling in my story, Rot. I want to eke out the situations and really make the reader feel they are there, or better still, the character is them. I had a fantastic time writing this story and I truly hope others enjoy it too."
