A cutting-edge immersive exhibition of subway street art and graffiti is set to captivate visitors at Leicester Museum and Art Gallery from early February.

Exhibition: Paint to Pixel x Repainting Subway Art
Location: Leicester Museum and Art Gallery, 53 New Walk, Leicester, LE1 7EA

The showcase, which features large-scale 3D animated projections, will transport audiences into a vibrant virtual world of subway trains, adorned with original graffiti artworks from global street artists.

This ground-breaking exhibition is a collaborative effort between Leicester-based arts organisation MBD and the aerosol art project team from Graffwerk, renowned for the globally acclaimed Bring The Paint street art festival, which is set to return to Leicester in May.

Support from BID Leicester, Arts Council England, and Leicester Museums and Galleries has made this unique experience possible.

Scheduled to launch on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Leicester Museum and Art Gallery, Paint to Pixel x Repainting Subway Art will celebrate the rich history of graffiti and street art, providing a platform for often overlooked artists to share their compelling narratives with new audiences.

The exhibition will be open until May 27 and will be divided into two parts:

The first half will host the immersive experience Paint to Pixel, which is MBD's latest large-scale animated installation. The local arts organisation is well known for work in virtual reality and 3D animation.

Complementing the immersive exhibit, the second half will feature archival material and first-hand narratives about street art and graffiti.

Additionally, it will showcase visually striking works resulting from a decade-long project by Dutch graffiti writer TRIPL/FURIOUS, curated by Jasper Van Es, titled Repainting Subway Art. This segment captures the essence of early graffiti and its global impact.

Visitors to Leicester Museum and Art Gallery will experience a colourful journey through the evolution of urban expression, encountering a blend of traditional and digital art along the way.

The exhibition sets the stage for the highly anticipated return of Bring The Paint, Leicester's international street art festival running from May 20 to 26. It promises an array of large-scale murals, exhibitions, and workshops across the city.
