Reviewed: Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

Sam Bailey played the role of Miss Hedge.

Celebrated for being a significant cultural touchstone of contemporary musical theatre, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie was performed by a stellar cast to a packed-out audience at Leicester’s Curve Theatre this week.

Inspired by the 2011 British television documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16, which follows the true story of Jamie Campbell, a teenager from County Durham who dreams of attending his school prom in a dress, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie delivers an uplifting and inclusive message, with themes of acceptance, self-expression, and the importance of community support.

The musical follows Jamie New – a 16-year-old from Sheffield who dreams of becoming a drag queen – and the obstacles he faces in his journey of self-discovery. Set against a backdrop of catchy songs and dynamic choreography, Everybody's Talking About Jamie at the Curve is a real celebration of individuality and the power of community support.

From the moment the opening number "And You Don't Even Know It" began, the energy was electric and choreography flawlessly executed, setting a vibrant and enthusiastic tone for the entire show.

Ivano Turco, in the role of Jamie, is nothing short of a revelation. His soft, perfect Sheffield accent and beautiful singing voice make him a standout star. He commands the stage with charisma and heart, making Jamie's journey both believable and deeply touching.

The show is peppered with comedic moments that had the entire auditorium in stitches.

Highlights include the hilarious scene with Jamie's birthday card from his father, the unveiling of his first pair of heels, and the showstopping trio of Laika Virgin (Ky Kelly), Sandra Bollock (Daniel Jacob), and Tray Sophisticay (David McNair). Each of these characters brought a unique charm and wit that enriched the overall production.

Leicester's own Sam Bailey took on the role of Miss Hedge, delivering the astounding vocals we have come to expect from her. Her performance was powerful and compelling, adding to the show's overall excellence.

Rebecca McKinnis, as Jamie's Mum Margaret New, delivered a heartfelt solo in "If I Met Myself Again." While the choreography during this number felt a bit too busy and detracted slightly from the emotional impact of the song, it is a minor gripe in an otherwise brilliantly choreographed show.

Another of the show’s highpoint’s was Kevin Clifton as Hugo/Loco Chanelle. His performance of "The Legend of Loco Chanelle" was a particular standout. Clifton’s portrayal was both entertaining and emotionally resonant.

Talia Palamathanan’s empowering and moving performance as Pritti Pasha captivated the audience, especially in the second act when her character stands up to school bully Dean Paxton (Jordan Rickets). Antagonists Dean and Jamie’s Dad (Akshay St Clair) were convincingly portrayed. Their performances elicited the intended dislike, yet Dean's character arc allowed for a touch of redemption by the end.

Sejal Keshwala's portrayal of Ray, the fun aunty, brought superb comedic moments and heartfelt guidance for Jamie. Her character added a wonderful layer of support and cheer to Jamie's story.

Set design was clever, minimal, and compact, seamlessly transitioning from scene to scene. This efficiency contributed to a very slick and polished production allowing the ensemble cast to shine in all dance numbers, keeping the audience captivated and engaged throughout.

With very little to fault, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie a must-see for fans of musical theatre.
