Michelle Ndegwa stuns with powerful vocals.
Hairspray the Musical at Curve Theatre is an energetic and almighty production that left this audience buzzing.
The show, set in 1960s Baltimore, follows the journey of Tracy Turnblad, a teenager with big dreams of dancing on the Corny Collins Show and promoting racial integration.
Alexandra Emmerson-Kirby shines in the role of Tracy Turnblad. She brings infectious energy and charm to the character. Another standout performer is of course Neil Hurst as Edna. He delivers a hilarious and endearing portrayal of Tracy’s mother. His comedic timing and chemistry with Dermot Canavan, who plays Wilbur Turnblad, are highlights of the show.
Joanne Clifton, known for her stint on Strictly Come Dancing, played Velma Von Tussle and brought an eccentric and well-acted performance as the prejudiced and manipulative character.
Then there’s Motormouth Maybelle, played by Michelle Ndegwa’s. With whopping vocals she gave us a soulful rendition of “I Know Where I’ve Been”. Simply show-stopping. Her performance is a reminder of the show’s underlying themes of acceptance and equality.
Another mention must go to Katlo who played Little Inez. She impresses with her superb singing and dancing, adding an extra layer of energy to the show.
The musical numbers are a feast for the ears, with standout songs including “Big, Blonde and Beautiful,” “Hairspray,” and the infectious “You Can’t Stop the Beat.” Each song is performed with such enthusiasm that the entire audience was up on their feet, singing, dancing, and cheering along.
Combining humour, heart, and a meaningful message, Hairspray at Curve is a must-see production. The cast’s stellar performances, coupled with the show’s catchy tunes and vibrant choreography, make for an unforgettable theatrical experience.
