Crime rates dropped by 28% between 2019 and 2022.
Six months after BID Leicester introduced a new ‘Safe Space’ service in the city centre, the service has helped more than 170 people enjoying Leicester’s vibrant evening and nighttime economy.
The Safe Space is designed to provide a secure and supportive environment for anyone who may need assistance during the evening and nighttime hours.
It offers essentials such as mobile phone charging, footwear, and refreshments including tea, coffee, and water from the gazebo located on Market Street (near McDonald's), and will operate on key nights throughout the year, facilitated by St. John Ambulance.
The service has been made possible through collaborative working between BID Leicester and Leicestershire Police, using GRIP funding from the Home Office which is aimed at reducing violence in hotspot areas.
This new initiative builds on Leicester’s recent success in reducing crime in the evening and nighttime economy (ENTE). A report from late 2023 revealed that overall crime rates in the city’s ENTE dropped by 28% between 2019 and 2022.
This significant reduction, supported by various safety initiatives from BID Leicester and local partners, highlights the progress made in making Leicester a safer place for residents and visitors alike.
McDonalds Franchisee Director, Angus Fraser, said: “The St John Ambulance Safe Space has been a positive addition for people using the city centre's nighttime economy venues.
“We've noticed the environment on Market Street has improved during the hours the SJA team are there and have seen first hand the value a service like this offers those using the night time economy venues. It’s great to be able to offer a safe space."
Leicestershire Police Detective Inspector Mark Brennan said about the new provision:
“Leicestershire Police are pleased that BID Leicester has utilised Home Office GRIP funding to develop this safe space working in conjunction with St. John Ambulance. This will help us in our efforts to prevent crime and keep vulnerable people safe in Leicester’s night-time economy”.
The initiative comes in addition to a dedicated medical service funded by BID Leicester and the Office of Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC). The medical provision, also facilitated by St. John Ambulance, plays a crucial role in supporting Leicester's nighttime economy.
By providing first aid and other essential services, St. John Ambulance helps maintain a safe environment for all, reducing the burden on local emergency services and ensuring a pleasant experience for everyone enjoying the city's nightlife and swift medical assistance should it be required.
In 2023, the medical provision assessed 576 patients, avoided 349 emergency 999 calls, and responded to 152 urgent calls on behalf of the NHS. It is hoped that the addition of this ‘Safe Space’ will continue to improve access to assistance and the experience of those enjoying Leicester’s night life even further.
BID Leicester, Leicester’s Business Improvement District, is a non-profit funded by funded by local businesses. It is dedicated to improving Leicester’s city centre by making it safer, cleaner, and more attractive. Through various initiatives, BID Leicester supports the local business community and enhances the overall experience for residents and visitors alike.
Simon Jenner, Director of BID Leicester, commented: “The launch of the 'Safe Space' service earlier this year was a major step forward in making Leicester’s night-time economy safer for everyone. By providing a safe, supportive environment with practical services like phone charging and refreshments, we’re helping visitors enjoy their night out with peace of mind.”
BID Leicester's projects include high-profile events and projects dedicated to making Leicester cleaner, greener, safer and more attractive.
In addition to the St. John Ambulance provision, BID Leicester has implemented several key initiatives to enhance the safety of the city's nighttime economy.
These include:
· Best Bar None:
A scheme recognising responsible venues that adhere to high standards of safety and customer care. 50 city centre venues achieve accreditation earlier this month.
· Street Ambassadors:
A first aid trained team, offering a reassuring presence in the city centre. Street Ambassadors are ready to assist and guide visitors and report anti-social behaviour, fly-tipping and tagging.
· Purple Flag:
An accreditation showcasing Leicester's high standards for managing the nighttime environment, ensuring it is safe and welcoming. Last year’s award recognised a significant drop in crime in the evening and night time economy.
The introduction of the Safe Space service means that anyone enjoying a night out in Leicester can have peace of mind knowing there is a dedicated area they can visit if they need assistance. Whether it's to charge their phone, grab a drink, ask questions, or simply take a moment to rest, the new space is there to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable night in Leicester.
